As the holiday season approaches we realize that too often stress and noise--‘to do’ lists and expectations cast a shadow on what we all wish this spirited season to represent: sharing time with family and friends, showing one another our love and appreciation, and giving back to our personal sphere as well as our community.

My What A Busy Week!

This week has been crazy to say the least! Two of our team was in Las Vegas for a national hair show for the first half of the week and came back with a ton of information and new styling goodies for the staff to "oooh and ahhh" over.

The coolest thing (besides the Twilight themed lip stain Carly got) was a couple of awesome new curling irons. Check out the double barrel on the top one!!
Reminds me of something else that is super sweet...
You also have to, or rather GET to, rock a cool black glove when using these irons because they are clip-less. (ie: there is nothing holding the hair onto the iron, it's just a hot metal wand in your hand!) So for safety sake, you get to rock a Michael Jackson vibe when using them.

We are also teaming up with the lovely staff of Betty's Divine for their Spring fashion show at The Badlander. It's going down TONIGHT around 10p and there is a $3 cover and dollar drinks till midnight!

We're also gearing up for the finale of Project Selvedge which is happening on May 7th.

And of course, we are heading into the summer which means graduations, weddings and lots and lots of hilights! So book early if you have a specific stylist that you are keen on and keep checking back for more awesome discounts and deals from your Hip Strip Salon!

While brainstorming for our new promotion, we tried to think about what WE would want out of our salon experience. In these times, I feel like any sort of break on the cost of an appointment would be much welcomed by our bank accounts! But we also wanted it to be fun... So what better way to couple discounts with fun then invite our clientele to bring in a friend and get a discount for doing so. If you (or your friend) are already part of the BoomSwagger Crew and have been to us before, your discount is 5% off any service. If you are new to the salon, it's 10% off!

So, just to clarify, both regulars? 5% off each. Both new? 10% off! One new, one regular? 10% and 5% off respectively. The one catch is that you have to book the appointments together. Which is why it's the BoomSwagger BFF Special. Just remember to mention it when you're booking your appointments!

Coolest 8th Grader You Know!

Last Saturday we had Jordan come in with a couple ideas about having pop color pieces in her hair. She was definitely nervous and her mom even said the night before her appointment she was hesitating and wondering if she should go through with her idea.

I think she made a good choice ;)

Possibly some of the coolest pop color we've had in the shop, Morgan rocked this look for her incorporating blue, green and hot pink highlights within the dark chocolate base color. I am sure she'll be turning heads at school and making everyone jealous! (I know I am a little jealous and I'm 28!!) The best part about a client walking out of the shop looking awesome is that they become a walking billboard for the salon. If they're happy, they're going to spread the word.

Dozens of times a week, we get phone calls from people who have never been in but have a friend, co-worker or even a random stranger, whose hair they loved, who had been in to BoomSwagger.

It's all about word of mouth and for that we are forever in debt to our amazing clientele.

Our lovely friend and former BoomSwagger client sent us this kick ass photo of himself rocking some sweeeeeeet finger waves. Not a look a lot of dudes can pull off, but then again Justin is not just any guy.
A former model for Betty's Divine and all around cool kid, he's now in enrolled in an Aveda Beauty School in North Carolina. And from the looks of it, he's at the top of his class.

The Amazing Abby!

I wanted to take a minute to introduce our newest addition to the shop. Fresh outta school, Abby won our hearts over as a model at the Avant-Garde Hair Show and is now part of the team as a Front Desk Assistant and our shop apprentice.
The awesome thing about having an apprentice at the shop is that it gives our stylists someone to rely on when they need assistance and also lets the apprentice be paid while they are continuing their education. Salons in larger cities usually require stylists to apprentice for a few YEARS before they are cutting hair on their own. I think we are lucky to be able to provide more hands on experience while getting a great addition to the team!

Project Selvedge

Last week we teamed up with fellow Hip Strip business, Selvedge Studio to do the hair and makeup for Project Selvedge. For those of you unfamiliar with Project Selvedge, think Project Runway with less Tim Gunn and more Matty...
We were lucky enough to be asked to contribute hair and makeup for the models and this last challenge was a doozy! All the clothes has to be made out of paper with additional points for use of recycled/reclaimed materials.

Think Pink!

Most people are either too shy or too scared to do a dramatic pop color in their hair (for anything other than a party or Halloween) but it's a great way to stand out in a crowd. Speaking from personal experience, I have had the Roy G. Biv of hair color through out my life (IE: every shade of the rainbow). But as I started to get into "real" adulthood (early twenties you can still squeeze out of the adult category) my pop color became non-existent. I was too worried about what people would say about a 28 year old with green and blue hair. Could I really sit in a business meeting and be straight faced when my hair looked like a peacock? As it turns out, I could...

Granted, I have it easier because I work at a salon. But I feel like pop colored hair is no different then tattoos or eccentric clothing and within reason, should have a place in the everyday business world.

That being said, we had an amazing chica come into the salon today to try out a vibrant shade of pink. She was in the very capable hands of Morgan, who has had a few clients request pop-colors in their 'dos before. And it turned out awesome...

She was thrilled and I was happy to see another "adult" take the chance on some color.

Happy (Almost) Birthday!

I cannot believe that we are soon approaching our one year anniversary at BoomSwagger Salon. On Friday April 2nd we will officially cross the one year mark here on the Hip Strip. The past twelve months have been an amazing time for our entire staff and everyones hard work has certainly paid off in a busy schedule and an amazing clientele.

New Products and March Makeup Madness!

After a much needed break, we are back on the blog! The big news this month is the new line of Catwalk Curlesque products. You may be familiar with the previous "Curls Rock" line from Catwalk which had the devotion of most every curly-haired female I know. However, Catwalk has started to restructure and rework their entire line and Curls Rock has transformed into Curlesque. The packaging has a much more refined look and the products are better than ever.

They kept the formulas on their best sellers like the Curl Amplifier the same (I think they would have had a riot on their hands otherwise), but added some fancy science-y stuff to some of their new styling products. For example, they now have two mousses in the collection which have "Total Style Recall Technology". In layman's terms, you can scrunch your second day hair back to the original style without the use of extra products, water, etc.

Our manager Crystal's perm is looking more full and less frizzy with the new products. And even though it's been a good 20 years since she used mousse, she's already purchased the Strong Mousse and is carrying it around in her purse in case of hair emergencies.

Avant-Garde Hair Show

It's been a crazy week leading up to our Avant-Garde hair show at the Badlander. So busy in fact, that we have slacked on our responsibility of taking/posting photos from this week's styles for 30 Days of Hair!

Day 20

In addition to today being busy in the salon, we also were hosting a VIP party for the Big Sky Film Festival. We'll try and get some photos up in a timely manner, but first a tiny taste of what you are going to see at the Avant-Garde Hair Show next Thursday at the Badlander.

Yea. Freakin' awesome, right?!? That is just one of the 15+ models that will be showing off the skills of our Steezy Stylists.

The lowdown for the show (if you don't already know) is as follows:

Thursday February 25th at The Badlander we're doing our first annual Avant Garde Hair Show and Live Styling Event. We'll have drink specials untill midnight, steezy prizes and you'll get to party down with your favorite Hip Strip Stylists. Doors open at 8pm and the show starts at 8:30pm. ($3 cover starts at 9pm, so get their early and stay for the Dead Hipster Dance Night!)

Day 19

Run out of rope, tie a knot and hang on for Thursday...

Crystal was trying to channel a little bride of Frankenstein in her look. A ton of backcombing and an equal amount of Bedhead Hard Head Hairspray was the foundation for this style. A clear headband covered by a few strips of hair completed the 'do.

Morgan added some pizazz to a typical flat ironed look. By pulling back the sides and leaving the fringe long in the front, you change up a style with minimal effort.

**Even though Thursdays are one of the few days we have almost the entire staff in the salon, it also means we are super busy... hence the two photos.**

Day 18

Wednesday won't go away...

Katie's hair has twists on the top to vary the look from a standard half up pony tail. She also had a little bit of wave in her style, which can be amplified with a simple curling spritz like Peace, Love and The Planet's Totally Beachin' Spray.

Crystal wanted to go no-nonsense today. She put up her hair in a messy topknot and pinned up her fringe. You can barley notice her crazy peacock colored hair, which is a great for someone who likes to be a chameleon with their looks.

Brooke and Kelly are back to taking their photos together, but switching up the background. Kelly has a half up/half down look while Brooke is rocking a long curly side braid. Brooke's curls will hold all day thanks to the Catwalk Curls Rock Curl Booster. Nice looks ladies!

Day 17

Give me your heart and I'll love you till Tuesday...

Katie was channeling a little Farrah today with a flipped out 'do. Her look can be done by using a flat iron and just flipping the hair outward at the ends. (a much more subtle take on the look then a full curling iron flip.)

Crystal was a curly girl today with cute piggies to top off her look. Having bold colors in your hair means different partings can change the look of your hair drastically. Parting it on the opposite side, hides a lot of the pop color for a more sophisticated look.

Brooke added some length with some kickass extensions. Her normally wavy hair gets a boost not only in length but also in bulk. While not a permanent look, definitely fun for a couple days to change up your style.

Day 16

Just another Manic Monday...

Many apologies to those who were waiting with baited breath!)

Katie had a little wave going on. You can keep the look simple by using your flatiron to add a bit of wave to the hair without going all-out curly. Plus, using a product like the Peace, Love and the Planet's Totally Beachin' you can keep your look all day!

Morgan went for glamour-puss hair with those big curls. The larger the curling iron the better for a look like this. Prepping the hair with any of the Curls Rock products from Catwalk will help define and hold your lovely locks.

Melinda went for cute and playful. Pinning up half of your hair is the perfect way to showcase any layering that your cut has and also makes a look less stuffy and more fun!

Day 14

It's Friday, I'm in love...

Brooke was trying to sneak out of the salon without a photo, but we caught her mid-sprint. She kept her look smooth and straight, with a heavy side part to bring out her sultry nature. (FACT: While center parts make you look more symmetrical and thus more classically "beautiful", an off center (asymmetrical) part will make you appear more sexy.)

Curls rocked Crystal's world today! A devotee of the Catwalk Curls Rock product line, she used a bit of the amplifier mixed with the Rockaholic Rock Out Shine Blaster to prep her hair for some hard core curling iron time. Pinning up your fringe lets you focus on the curls.

Melinda packed a punch with another awesome hair accessory. A feathered clip is not only hip but also easy to put into any style without having to build the style around it. Melinda wore her hair straight and clipped the side to add dimension.

Kelly was off to sign all the papers for her new house, so we missed getting her photo... but CONGRATS LADY!!

Day 13

Relax in time it's only Thursday...

Morgan's cute do is hiding some styling secrets. Her hair is not just pinned up on the sides, but held in place by tiny braids.

Melinda is all about the profile shots this week! Having your hair up is one way to look elegant without being overdone. Lots of bobbie-pins and some slick products are how you pull it all together.

Kelly's going flat out gorgeous today! Sleek and sexy is her theme for the day. Shiny hair always starts with a great shampoo and the Health Factor line from S-Factor not only promotes healthy hair but adds lustrous shine!

Katie's look is sleek and sassy! Backcombing at the roots (along with a little Your Highness Root Boost) gives this look a lift. Pinning up your bangs can change the shape of the style and let you highlight so kickin' makeup skills.

Crystal ran out of the salon without a picture, so she had to send one via camera phone. Little braids are a quick and simple option when you feel a little rushed (or lazy!!) and still want to look cute.

Waiting for Wednesday...

Melinda's updos are just getting better and better. A little curl can go a long way when you put your hair up and products like the Catwalk Curls Rock Amplifier can hold the look for hours.

Katie proves that small changes in style can make a big difference. Her pony is spruced up by tiny braids on each side.

Crystal took a cue from the Jersey Shore and did the Snooki poof on her locks. (One client even asked if she had a "bump-it" in.) Fortunately for her and her thick hair, a little backcombing and hairspray does the trick.

Kelly was curl crazy today! Her beautiful hair gets help holding the curl with products from the Curls Rock Catwalk line. Proof that a little product goes a long way!

Carly busts out some more accessories for today's look. And on point with the current trend, she is fully feathered! For all you crafty ladies out there, a hot glue gun and some items from the craft store could help you get custom hair accessories on a budget.

Katie rocked a side pony/bun. It had the messy chic look is pulled off well when the front of the style is slick. Just changing up the placement of your pony changes a look!
Crystal bowed down the the backcomb brush and used a very liberal amount of the Hard Head Hairspray to keep this style in place. Looked like it was inspired by the Leaning Tower of Pisa.

Morgan kept it simple with an upswept 'do. A high knot in the back and piecey layers makes this look easy but classic.

Monday, Monday so good to me...

Carly kept her look clean and simple, pulled back with a touch of lace. Wearing your hair up or having short hair can be a great excuse for some large and in charge earrings.

Katie is the poster child for a heavy, straight bang. It's fashion forward and looks good on a variety of face shapes. Her look is half up/half down and all steez.

Melinda wore her hair down and a little "messy". There is always a fine line with a style that is not "done up", but with a little pomade and a head shake you'll be set.

You would never know from looking at Saturday's styles how devious our staff is...

Melinda looks sweet and simple with a minimalistic approach to her style.

Carly shocked the entire clientele when she wore her hair down and showcased her lovely dark locks. The key to styling fine hair is to not over-do your products. Too much can weigh down skinny strands, but products like Dirty Secret Dry Shampoo can give lift to any style.

Morgan wins today's round for cutest overall look. A silk scarf can change up a style dramatically (we've mentioned before how much we heart accessories!). She also curled tendrils in the front to make an all-over cute 'do for the day!

Crystal busted out a side-pony for Saturday's style (and a new cardigan and necklace from the Betty's Sale!). While her hair is getting long, it's not THAT long but a few extension pieces clipped in and no one is the wiser

Friday and we're feeling fly...

Crystal busted out the flat iron for her straight 'do. I dab of the S-Factor Smoothing Lusterizer on wet hair and a spritz of the Shine Spray leave her very processed hair feeling like a million bucks!

Kelly also went for a soft and straight look, but pinned up her fringe to create volume and add a different look for this style.

Melinda kept it simple with side swept bangs and a big smile! A spray pomade like the Rockaholic Groupie Spray will add hold your locks in place without the overly sticky/hard feeling of a typical hairspray.

For all you Jersey Shore fans, Brooke modified the Snooki poof to be a little less outrageous and a little more sexy. A little backcombing and some hairspray can go a long way to creating this style and a quick pass with the flat iron with help the bottom stay smooth.

Day 7

One week down! Three more to go...

Kelly wore her hair pulled back with upswept bangs. She's been against having her hair up in the past because, in her eyes, it's just too casual a look for work. However, she rocked it out with a little backcombing for volume and a bit of sass.

Morgan combined two different techniques for her look today. She had her hair half up/half down but kept the look soft and subtle with loose waves. Putting a curling product in your hair while it's wet and then using a diffuser will help bring out those spirals.

Brooke keeps it simple with a basic side braid. A great trick when you're stumped for a switch to your 'do and don't have much time to waste.

Crystal channeled the Rockabilly spirt for her look today. Lots of hairspray and a medium sized curling iron was the key to this look.

Carly gives the thumbs up to this classic look. A quick flat iron and some S-Factor shine spray will give your hair the foundation for your look. Bobbie-pins on the side turn the 'do into a cute variation.

Katie embraced elegance with big waves and a swept back fringe. Use a large barreled curling iron or if your curls are too tight, a couple passes through your locks with a large toothed comb (or your fingers!) will loosen the curl.

Melinda wowed us all will a handmade headband that she made this morning! Her hair was slicked back with one of the easiest, yet most dramatic change to any hairstyle: a great accessory!

Day 6

Happy Hump Day! Half way through the week... (p.s. not sure what is up with the font situation)

Morgan can pull off the effortless cute look better than anyone else in our salon. For those of you devoted to your flat irons, products like S-Factor Heat Defender can save your locks from damage and actually make the entire hair shaft more smooth. A basic style can still be switched up by a different part or by pinning back one side of the hair.

Carly stepped up to the plate even though she wasn't working. Her curls got looser and more wild by today and she accented her look with a vintage hair piece.

Katie rocked a pony with attitude. Pinning up your fringe will highlight your face and give you a look that is easy and elegant. The look is made softer by leaving out some of her textured layers to frame the face.

Crystal's color may look a little different today, but it's only a matter of parting. When you have multiple colors in your hair, a change in part can make a huge difference. By parting further on one side, her peacock colors become a little more subtle. Her curls are pinned up to create the allusion of a shorter style.
This picture hardly does justice to the awesomeness of Melinda's 'do. A curling iron and some bobbie-pins can give your look a 180. Back combing at the crown makes sure her style wont fall flat and a spritz of the Fun Times Flexible Hairspray from Rockaholic will hold her look all day.

Day 5

Curls seemed to dominate Tuesday's hairstyles...

Katie went for some soft waves to switch up her style. Products like the Totally Beachin' spray from Peace, Love and The Planet line give you the tousled, spent the day on the beach waves. Nothing too tight or over done here, just a soft style.

Brooke pinned up the back of her hair in a messy bun and let her layers fall where they may. If you are worried about pulling off a similar look without crossing the line from sexy bed head to just rolled out of bed, a little product can go a long way. Using a light pomade can piece out the layers left out of the up-do and a quick blast of the S-Factor Shine Spray pull the look together.

Crystal was looking to go more glam with her hair and a large barreled curling iron can do the trick. The bigger the iron the looser the look. Adding product before curling will help hold the curl longer and will be less damaging to the hair. Back-combing the top half and running your fingers through the curls will make the whole style softer.

Kelly channeled a little Farrah and added a little curl while letting the shorter layers of her hair flip out and add some edge to the style.

Carly used a teeny tiny curling iron to get these tight curls. Once curled, product and pins can complete the style. If you want to revamp your curls for a second day of wear, you can always use the Curls Rock Curl Booster from the Catwalk to rock those locks for one more day.

Our stylists sure didn't have a "case of the Mondays" today!

Melinda pinned up her short cut to change her entire look for the day. Shorter hair holds well with a flexible pomade like the Eco Freako from the Peace, Love and Planet line.

Katie showed off her textured haircut by wearing it down and flat ironed.

A messy ponytail lets you look funky not stuffy (as a typical slicked back pony can look). Carly gave us her best profile and showed off the layers in her cut.

Day 3

Saturdays at the salon are always fun! The weekend just brings a different attitude to both our staff and our clients (maybe it's the mimosas)!

Katie kept it simple by pinning up the top layer of her hair, while letting her flat ironed fringe be the stand out of her look.

Carly channeled some old school glamour with a side part and swooping fringe to make a basic hairstyle into an instant classic.

Kelly and Brooke are into the double photos and even have started incorporating props. Both ladies went for sleek and side swept. I few products (like S-Factor Smoothing Lusterizer and Dream Drops) can take even the most unruly locks and smooth them out for a simple yet sexy style.

Crystal was channeling Lady Gaga for her "HairBow" look. A quick twist in the back left the front smooth, so you can focus on the bow. She used extensions to fashion a bow and just bobbie-pinned the finished product on.

Day 2

Fridays are always a little crazy in the salon and today was no exception...

We were busy enough for Brooke and Kelly to have to pose together for their photo. Kelly's got some loose curls going on and Brooke switched up a basic 'do with multiple twisted pieces to pull back her bangs while also giving volume to the back.

The mohawk left Crystal's hair in need of some deep conditioning. The leave-in conditioner she used helped double as a styling aid to hold some not-so basic braids.

Melinda tried to sneak out of the shop without getting a photo, but we had to document the simple waves she rocked. Putting a little curl in your hair can easily transform a style into that bed head chic without looking like you actually just rolled out of bed.

And so it begins...

Today was the kick off of our 30 Days of Hair competition...

Crystal decided to start it off with a bang and a backcombed mohawk. Much easier to create then you would imagine, she put 5 mini ponytails going down the center of her hair and then ratted the hell outta 'em. Being a devotee to the BedHead Hard Head Hairspray, she also didn't scrimp on shellacking her 'do to guarantee it held all day.

Kelly knows that a simple change in fringe can change the whole look of your hair. Flat ironed sides give her a sleek look, while her pinned up bangs keep it sophisticated and functional (no one wants a haircut from someone who can't see what they're doing! )

A simple pony can be made even better with a little product and backcombing. Katie rocked a pony and her new cute specs to start the competition. And check out that fringe! Personally, I think bangs are something everyone should try once ;)

Brooke was so busy cutting hair, that we had to snap her photo on the job. A high top knot and pinned up bangs completes her look of effortless chic!

Morgan was also rocking a pony, but left some face framing fringe on the sides while pulling her bangs off to the side. It's amazing how small changes can really turn one signature style into multiple different looks.

Carly busted out some product from the Catwalk Curls Rock line and got her waves in motion. Regardless of the natural wave (or lack there of) in your hair, a couple of minutes with a curling iron can make you look like you just stepped off the beach. (For you longer haired ladies, a couple braids while your hair is still wet, will do the trick as well)

Melinda's short cut may feel limiting to some, but pinning up the sides let the textured fringe frame her face and make the look different without being drastic.

30 Days of Hair

We are challenging ourselves and our clients to a 30 day challenge of Hair Awesomeness! All to often, our hair becomes safe and routine. Flat ironed for the office, high ponytail on the weekends. We get trapped into a style and it becomes less like and accessory and more like a habit. Think of it like a purse: you have the same one most every day… maybe you’ll switch it up for a cocktail party or out on a date, but 9 times out of 10 you’re locked into carrying the same bag day in and day out.

It’s time to start giving your hair the attention it deserves. You spend time applying the perfect makeup or obsessing over which jewelry goes with your outfit, so why not a hairstyle that complements your look?

For the next month, we are going to test our creativity by having a new hairstyle every day for a month. We’ll get a break on our days off, so it works out to be 20 different hairstyles. We’ll be competing as a salon against one another and we are inviting our clients to compete as well. What constitutes a “different hairstyle” can be anything from curls to fringe to a different part to hair accessories. The more creative you are though, the better your chances become.

The client who makes it to the end of the 30 Days of Hair with the most creative styles, will win a color and cut ($100+ value) from BoomSwagger. Obviously, we will need documentation so feel free to either upload the pictures to a photo album on your Facebook or drop of a cd of the images at the end of the month. 30 Days of Hair will start Thursday, January 28th and run 4 weeks to Thursday, February 25th.

The Challenge is Set

A couple weeks ago I was confronted by CarlyJ in our back office. "I have a challenge for you," she smirked, with one of the evil smirks so you know something is up. "As a salon, we are going to compete to see who can wear their hair differently everyday for an entire month."

Quite a challenge if you ask me, plus it's rumored that there are going to be some prizes worth competing for. But we're expanding it beyond just our merry band of 9, to those of our clientele who are savvy enough with a digital camera and a fine tooth comb to want to compete as well. Photographic evidence is key and also part of the grander scheme. (To make a sort of art-instillation in the salon of all our efforts in a month of different hairstyles.)

As of yet, the rules are a bit vague... Although it was made clear to me that a change in fringe counted. Obviously, we have 'effed over Mario's chances of winning (unless he finds 30 different hats to wear!) so apologies up front to him. Not sure how long the rest of the team will stick it out, but it should be interesting regardless.
